The US has seen a steady decline in the overall incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) during the past several decades. In 1975, 60 people per 100,000 were diagnosed with colorectal cancer; by 2018, that number had fallen to 34. But overall trends in CRC incidence and outcomes often differ among racial groups and geographic locations. Black Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with CRC than White Americans and more likely to die from it. CRC mortality rates in American Indian and Alaska Native populations have stubbornly stayed put.

In 2020, medical experts warned that COVID-19 could, over time, have a substantial impact on cancer outcomes due to delayed or missed cancer screenings for patients. To obtain a better perspective of how cancer programs’ screening and outreach education efforts are recovering from pandemic pressures, ACCCBuzz spoke to four cancer programs across the country.

Given the difficulty of managing patients with a high disease burden who are often undergoing toxic treatment regimens, maintaining high-quality ovarian cancer care can be a challenge.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and the second-most common cancer detected in both men and women in the U.S. Lung cancer accounts for nearly 25% of all cancer deaths in this country. According to estimates by the American Cancer Society, 235,760 patients will be diagnosed with lung cancer, and 131,880 patients will die of the disease in 2021.

In launching its new campaign, Transforming Complex To Clear, ACCC brought together expert panelists to discuss effective practices and offer tips to address current barriers to biomarker testing in the community setting.

Due in no small part to global awareness efforts and transformative technological advances in breast cancer treatment, there has been a 40% decline in breast cancer deaths in the past 30 years. Nevertheless, current statistics remain sobering. An estimated 284,200 individuals in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2021, and approximately 44,130 people will die from the disease, making it the second leading cause of cancer death in women.

With projects that address acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), B-Cell ALL, and hematology disease education, ACCC is developing new resources for cancer programs and practices that focus on multidisciplinary approaches to caring for patients with blood cancer.

August 1 marks World Lung Cancer Day. Long at the forefront of teaching multidisciplinary cancer care teams about how to best implement new and evolving lung cancer therapies into their programs and practices, ACCC shares several of its current initiatives to promote optimal lung cancer care delivery.

Each May, Bladder Cancer Awareness Month helps highlight the facts about bladder cancer, promote awareness about the disease, and call for more investment in research, treatment, and care. This year’s theme emphasizes the importance promoting conversations about bladder cancer and its symptoms, treatments, and management.
