LIVER CANCER

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be cured when diagnosed early but lack of awareness on safety and efficacy data for targeted therapies can be a barrier to patients receiving curative treatment. While multidisciplinary clinics have improved equity in treatment access, barriers still exist in provider education and patient management such as variable physician attendance and need for an intensive referral infrastructure. To help fill this gap, nurse navigators in community cancer settings are essential to patient outreach, coordinating with the multidisciplinary team as well as providing navigation services to patients and caretakers.

“HCC is a difficult disease to manage because of the multiple components of care required – no single provider can address all needs. A multidisciplinary approach puts patients at the center and results in better experience and outcomes.”

— Joel Wedd, MD, MPH, Director of the Liver Tumor Clinic, Emory Transplant Center, Emory Healthcare

Making the Case for an HIV Oncology Clinic

Marco A. Ruiz, MD

Though the incidence of AIDS-defining cancers has decreased with the use of antiretroviral therapy, numerous studies suggest that non-AIDS-defining cancers (cancers not previously associated with HIV and AIDS) appear to be increasing in incidence.
